John McCusker’s week-long whistle workshop offers an immersive and wide-ranging exploration of music-making, drawing on over three decades of international performing, recording and composing experience.
The course will focus on developing musical voice and expression, with sessions covering whistle technique, tone, articulation and phrasing, alongside approaches to rhythm, ornamentation and lift. Particular attention will be given to musicality over mechanics, how technique serves feeling, shape and intention within a tune.
Composition will be a central theme throughout the week. John will share his own approaches to writing melodies, developing ideas, and finding inspiration within tradition, as well as practical ways to build, adapt and personalise tunes. Participants will also explore harmony, counter-melody and ensemble awareness, learning how whistle fits within broader musical textures and how to listen and respond musically to others.
Drawing on his extensive work across traditional, folk, rock and film music, John will discuss how different musical contexts influence playing style, arrangement and creative decision-making. Informal sessions will be interwoven with stories from the road, insights and anecdotes from decades of touring, recording and collaborating with musicians around the world, offering a candid look at life as a working musician and the lessons learned along the way.

The workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced players, though open to anyone who is curious, open-minded and eager to deepen their understanding of music beyond the notes.
