Foccroulle Geneviève

Since the early 1970s, Geneviève Foccroulle has been an active participant in the musical life of Liège, discovering and exploring early, contemporary and improvised music... She completed her musical studies at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège, where she obtained the higher diplomas in piano in the class of Marcelle Mercenier, and in chamber music in the class of Jean-Pierre Peuvion. She also studied improvisation with Garrett List and composition with Frederic Rzewski.

From 1980 to 2000, she taught piano at the Académie de Waremme and Remouchamps, then at the Conservatoire de Liège, where she became a sight-reading teacher and a chamber music lecturer. She is a co-founding member of the Synonymes ensemble and the Trois Mules Bleues trio with Jean-Yves Evrard and Vincent Jacquemin. She collaborates on dance creations (Mirages by G.Koutchoumova/JY Evrard), theater with La Mère by Brecht/Eisler, Rwanda 94 by Groupov/G.List, and opera (The Woman who walked into doors by K.Defoort).

In 2000, she decided to settle in France in the Tarn countryside. She continued her collaborations at the Theater and the Opera while participating in new musical projects in the Tarn, including the creation of a brass band, concerts in local people's homes. In 2003, she met Anthony BRAXTON and began working on the project of recording his solo piano music in its entirety. From 2004 to 2007, she performed Braxton's music in Austria, the United States, Belgium and France, and recorded the complete works in New York. In 2008, the recording was released by Leo Records (boxed set of 9 CDs).

Today, alongside solo piano concerts (Braxton, Cage, Feldman, Jo Kondo, Harder, Stiebler, etc.), she continues performing duets in classical and contemporary programs with singer Joëlle Gay, on 2 pianos with her sister Brigitte, and in improvisation with saxophonist Michel Doneda. She is currently working with Berlin musicians on music by Stiebler and Kondo. She is continuing her project on the Goldberg Variations on prepared piano, which is developing into variations on the Variations.

Geneviève Foccroulle runs the music workshops created in 2007 in a neighbouring village, where she teaches music to children and adults (piano, flute, music theory and improvisation).
