Description
Based on a repertoire of rhythms from North Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East, this course will focus on the darbuka, or doholla, a chalice-shaped percussion instrument. The instrumental techniques of the darbuka will be taught using the modern split-hand technique, although the rhythms practiced will draw from a wide variety of traditions.
From the 6/8 time signature of Moroccan chaabi to the rhythms of India and Turkey, this course is suitable for beginners aged 16 and up, as well as experienced darbuka players wishing to broaden their technical and rhythmic horizons. Learning is generally done by ear, so a recorder/dictaphone is a good way to keep track of the material covered. However, a specific notation system for the darbuka exists and will be used when necessary.
