Description

The Balkan Brass Band workshop explores a wide variety of festive Balkan repertoires, learning pieces representative of the musical identities of various countries and regions (Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Turkey, etc.). Melodies, ornamentation, harmonies, rhythms, improvisations: we will attempt to cover all the aspects that make up the richness of Balkan music. Oral transmission will be emphasized (learning by ear), but written materials (sheet music, chord charts) will also be provided. The workshop is designed for instruments typically found in brass bands (wind players, accordionists, tapa players, etc.), but remains warmly open to intrepid explorers (string instruments, etc.) eager to challenge preconceived notions (in which case a discussion with the instructor is required to best prepare for the workshop).

Typical day (adaptable):

In the morning, subgroups are formed to work on the specific characteristics of each type of instrument (melodic/harmonic/rhythmic) and the participants' skill levels.

The afternoon is devoted to collaborative work arranging the repertoire covered in the morning.
