Description

John McCusker's week-long whistle workshop offers an immersive and enriching exploration of musical practice, informed by over thirty years of international experience as a performer, composer, and studio musician.

The course will emphasize the development of musical voice and expression through sessions dedicated to whistle technique, tone, articulation, and phrasing, as well as approaches to rhythm, ornamentation, and lift. Particular attention will be paid to musicality rather than mechanics, and to how technique serves the feeling, form, and intention within a piece.

Composition will be a central theme throughout the week. John will share his own methods of melodic writing, idea development, and finding inspiration within the tradition, as well as practical tools for constructing, adapting, and personalizing tunes. Participants will also explore harmony, counter-melodies, and ensemble playing to understand the whistle's place within broader musical textures and to learn to listen and respond musically to others.

Drawing on his extensive experience in traditional, folk, rock, and film music, John will explore the influence of different musical contexts on playing style, arrangements, and creative choices. Informal moments will punctuate the workshop, blending tour stories, reflections, and anecdotes from decades of concerts, recordings, and collaborations around the world, offering a candid look at the life of a professional musician and the lessons learned along the way.
