Description
An intense workshop on Middle Eastern rhythms and instruments in the heart of nature! Whether in folklore for dance, or at court from poetry, rhythm in the Middle East occupies a central place. Whether you're looking to discover or perfect your skills, you're more than welcome.
Based on a repertoire of rhythms from the Maghreb, Middle and Far East, this course will focus on the darbuka, a chalice-shaped percussion instrument.
Learning the instrumental techniques of the darbuka will be based on the modern split hand technique, although the rhythms practiced will be drawn from tradition and worked on in the form of compositions created according to level. Improvisation in its various forms will also be included in the compositions.
Depending on the interests of each participant, and numbers permitting, we'll be lucky enough to be joined by Robbe Kieckens, a specialist in frame drums (bendir, riqq,...), who will accompany us in our learning and lead workshops on these instruments.
Required level
All levels welcome. Depending on the level, different groups will be created.
Learning is generally done by ear, so a recorder/dictaphone is a good way of keeping track of the material studied. Nevertheless, a specific darbuka notation system exists and will be used. We therefore recommend that you bring a notebook!
Equipment required
Bring a camping/yoga mat or cushion (whenever possible, we play outside).
Bring your own instrument (darbuka - preferably terracotta and natural skin, riqq, bendir, frame drum...). If necessary and on request, an additional instrument can be brought by the teacher (simon_leleux@hotmail.com)
