The workshop will be divided into two parts: group vocal work with jazz singing teachers in the morning and ensemble (combo) or vocal ensemble practice in the afternoon. This workshop offers an immersion in jazz and vocal improvisation and is aimed at anyone wishing to begin or deepen their knowledge of interpreting jazz standards and jazz vocal improvisation.
The morning sessions will be structured around the following elements:
- Vocal technique: the relationship between body and voice, relaxation, flexibility of vocal technique, and the use of vocal exercises adapted to the desired sound in different styles.
- Rhythm: the concepts of pulse, phrasing, and rhythmic placement within the body.
- Jazz harmony: listening, learning chords, scales, modes, and analyzing standards.
- Repertoire: phrasing and interpretation of a repertoire of jazz standards from various styles and genres (swing, blues, bossa nova, bebop, contemporary jazz).
- Improvisation: one of the pillars of jazz and, above all, a powerful tool allowing each participant to express themselves, to formulate a musical discourse in harmony with their personality and musical sensibility, and thus develop their creative potential. We will approach it in different ways: improvisation on chord grids, through the language of scat, instrumental imitation but also in free improvisation, solo or in groups, in Circle Songs, etc.
A comprehensive program designed to encourage playful exploration, awaken the imagination, foster musical interaction with others, and connect the body directly with rhythm and pulse... Music itself.
Note: To allow everyone to progress at their own pace, the group will be divided into three from the first day of the workshop, and each group will have lessons with one of the three instructors.
In the afternoons, participants will be divided into either instrumental ensembles of various styles, called "combos" and led by the different jazz instructors, or the vocal ensemble led by one of the singing instructors.
JAM COACHING: All participants will have the opportunity (upon registration) to have a coaching session during the week for the evening jams with pianist Igor Gehenot.
Level
Prior experience in jazz singing is preferred, however, some singing experience is required, whether in a group (band or choir) or through individual lessons in both academic and non-academic settings.
To allow everyone to progress at their own pace, the group will be divided into three from the first day of the workshop.
Equipement
It is important for learning the songs during the workshop to bring a recorder (the smartphone's recorder is sufficient).
Equipment will be provided on site, but if you have your own, please bring a microphone and cable to sing in the afternoon combos.
