Description
Chroma is the title of the book written by Derek Jarman about colour in the last months of his life when he was losing his sight. It is a kind of autobiography through colour, combining chromatic impressions, intellectual reflections on colour and childhood memories. Jarman can no longer see colours. But he can describe them; they are in his mind, his body and his emotions. He thus reveals one of the most powerful aspects of colour: its sensory and emotional impact.
Based on this premise, we will explore the physical and subjective capabilities of colour through the practice of painting and dyeing. The course will focus on these two dimensions, combining technical learning and experimental research.
We will address the physical nature of colour, from studying its impact on light to physically entering into it through large-format painting and immersing our hands in it through dyeing processes.
And, like a chromatic diary, we will apply the laws of colour in relation to our moods of the day, with the help of different colour symbolisms, to build up an intimate and pictorial repertoire.
We will work with coloured drawing, watercolour, acrylic painting and dyeing.
