Description

Widely used in the textile industry, this material is currently found in most clothing, mainly sportswear.

This workshop proposes to divert its function and use its properties to explore plastic forms ranging from sculpture to installation, and even performance.

Designing a sculptural, spatial or performative form from a stretchable material requires the addition of a structure for the form to be realised. Whether this structure is internal or external, certain steps are necessary to construct a work with this textile.

Ideally, this material is designed to be stretched to produce smooth shapes. To adapt it to a structure, it is necessary to understand its stretchability in order to create the template for the cuts. Pattern making is therefore essential for creating a precise shape. However, it is also possible to use this material more instinctively in order to achieve a more spontaneous result.

Any structural shape is possible for deploying this fabric: you can make your own structure, reuse an existing structure, or directly use the morphology of a place, not to mention the possibility of using your own body. Naturally, all these shapes can be combined.

This material has its constraints, but also this fascinating epidermal elasticity... which allows for multiple extensions.
