Description

With Frédérique Bigonville and Grégoire Capliez, discover the different facets of this ancient art.

The course will be organised in the form of a workshop, where you will be able to experiment with the different stages of creating objects such as CHAWAN (hand-modelled bowls), small simple pieces and also jewellery, culminating in Raku firing.

The Raku firing process involves opening the kiln at 1000° to create a thermal shock that cracks the glaze on the pieces. This is followed by smoking, where carbon penetrates the cracks and unglazed areas, giving the sculptures a unique appearance specific to the Raku technique. This method makes ceramic firing accessible to everyone, even those with limited resources. It can be done in a variety of kilns that can be made yourself at little cost: a wood paint pot, a gas canister, a microwave oven or a washing machine drum.

After this course, the principles of engobe, enamel, oxide, sulphate, oxidation, reduction... will hold no secrets for you.

Ultimately, the magic of RAKU lies in the sudden contradiction of these elements: earth, fire, air and water coming together for a minute. A minute during which aesthetics are left to chance, hence the saying: ‘No Raku without surprise’.
