VANDER ESSEN Marie-Gilles

A graduate of the Royal Conservatories of Liège and Brussels, Marie-Gilles Vander Essen completed her training at the Académie internationale d'été de Wallonie (voice, Balinese mask and physical theater).

In 1996, she turned towards contemporary theater and more particularly towards directing and founded with other actors a non-profit organization, “L'impact”, which created shows in Liège, Brussels, Namur and which settled permanently in the province of Luxembourg in 2000. This marked the start of a long and fruitful collaboration with the Centre Culturel de Bertrix, which co-produced her shows: La maladie d'être mouche by Anne-Lou Steininger in 2000 - Diktat by Enzo Cormann in 2001 - Comédie sur un quai de gare by Samuel Benchetrit in 2002 - Cendres sur les mains by Laurent Gaudé in 2004 - Art by Yasmina Reza in 2005 - Marchandises (creation of a multimedia show) in 2006 - L'ouest solitaire by Martin Mc Donagh in 2007-. It also stages amateur theater groups: le théâtre du Hérisson in Rossignol ( La ballade des planches by Jean-Paul Alègre in 2003- Demain, une fenêtre sur rue by Jean-Claude Grumberg in 2004- Après la pluie by Sergi Belbel in 2006 - Silence en coulisses by Michael Frayn in 2007- Une table pour six by Alan Ayckbourn in 2008- Le ravissement d'Adèle by Rémi De Vos in 2019)) and the Bertrix theater center (Le dîner de cons by Francis Veber in 2004 - Tailleur pour dames by Georges Feydeau in 2005).

She also staged Leonard Bernstein's musical "West Side Story" under the direction of conductor David Reiland in 2006, and in 2007, with the support of the Bertrix Cultural Centre, created a show for the very young entitled "Recto Verso".

Marie-Gilles Vander Essen has been teaching at the Bertrix Academy since 1995. She gave theater courses for 15-18 year-olds at the Académie internationale d'été de Wallonie (AKDT) from 2003 to 2008, and was then artistic advisor for the Performing Arts from 2008 to 2018.
