Description
For this course, the trainees would learn to create their gesso (either white or transparent) in order to use it during the week on their supports. Depending on their wishes, they can decide to use the transparent one to leave the wooden support visible or not, therefore they will use the white gesso. Comparative tests can also be carried out in order to see what suits them best as well as their practice. Different supports can be tested to see the reaction of these in relation to painting with and without gesso.
We will also be able to make our own oil paintings with the appropriate medium and pigments (primary colors, black and white) and the medium according to a personal recipe that is easy to learn, accessible and easily reproducible at home. This medium is the necessary basis for using oil paint and does not require any other. The workshop is both a laboratory and a kitchen, where trainees will need a notebook to write down their experiences and recipes. In addition, the course will also focus on the small format maximum 13x18 cm and minimum 5x7 cm (on wood, canvas and paper).
Working with small formats is a process that must be acquired and a specific apprenticeship. You must learn to dissect and see the main lines of your image so as not to overload your format. You must simplify the lines and reduce them as much as possible in order to cut up your work. Learning to cut up is a fundamental element in the small format so as not to get lost and not to overflow in the creation. Learning the treatment according to the subject is also difficult on a small format and research is fundamental.
The tools are also adapted: small single-haired brushes (with different hairs to obtain different effects). Some larger brushes can be used. Learning the different brushes is essential (gesso brushes, single-haired brushes, etc.). You have to learn to work in bulk to acquire the gestures of painting. But also the work of the support which has a different treatment depending on whether it is wood, paper or canvas. In addition to the pictorial technique, trainees will be able to discover the world of small format, its codes, its creation technique, white space (breathing).
