Description
With Frédérique Bigonville and Grégoire Capliez, discover the different facets of this age-old art.
The course will be organized in the form of a laboratory and you will be able to experiment with the different stages of creating objects such as shamans (hand-shaped bowls), small simple pieces and also jewelry to end up with Raku firing.
The Raku firing process consists of opening the oven at 1000° in order to create a thermal shock that cracks the enamel placed on the pieces. This is followed by smoking, where the carbon penetrates the cracks and the unglazed areas, giving the sculptures a unique appearance, specific to the Raku technique. This method makes firing ceramics accessible to everyone, with few means. Indeed, it takes place in a multitude of ovens that can be made yourself at little cost: wood paint pot, gas can, in a microwave oven or in a washing machine drum.
After this course, the principles of engobe, enamel, oxide, sulfate, oxidation, reduction... will no longer hold any secrets for you.
Ultimately, The Magic of RAKU is the sudden contradiction of these elements: earth, fire, air and water that come together for a minute. A minute during which aesthetics are left to chance, hence this faithful adage: "No Raku without surprises".
